King Minos and the Minotaur

I swiped this pic from War Child Home Page, an organization that sells famous artists' works and uses the profits to benefit children who are the victims of war. David Bowie painted this art and donated it to their cause a while back. David Bowie's painting David Bowie

For those of you not up on Greco-Roman mythology, King Minos trapped his son, the Minotaur - a half-man/half-bull creature - in a vast labyrinth on the island of Crete. The ruins of a labyrinth really do exist on Crete, but whether or not DB was inspired by Labyrinth to paint a Minotaur, I cannot say.
DB CD
David Bowie's 1995 release, 1. Outside, also refers to a Minotaur in the CD booklet. This picture and a liner note that I'm Deranged is sung by ARTIST MINOTAUR appear within. I'll try to find out what the references mean and share them.
So far, I've only found a reference in a recent David Bowie biography, which only mentioned that DB exhibited some work for an exhibition called Minotaur Myths and Legends. I thought the year was 1986, but I left off the date when I copied the info, so I could have been later.

At Liorah's recommendation, I finally found "Guardian's Key." Awesome book!! Very, very Labyrinthian. Dara (Sarah) goes through the Crystal Keep (Labyrinth) to defeat the seductive Lord Vanian (Jareth) so that she can find her wish (her brother). And, as Liorah had said, some of the lines were hauntingly familiar: "How are you enjoying my keep?" "What is your basis for comparison? I wonder." "I rather thought you'd have given up by now." Although dark, Lord Vanian's hair was described in such a way that it was reminiscent of Jareth's. Dara had long dark hair. Lord Vanian was even pale, like our beloved Goblin King!! I must concur with Liorah: if you can find this book, pick it up. It's quite good. Shoot, Dara even has her equivalent to Hoggle: a reluctant little monkey-creature named Gespry who has to be bribed to help her.

I don't know if anyone has read "The Forbidden Game" by L. J. Smith but it is almost exactly like the Labyrinth. It has the same basic plot. I wonder if the author copied off the movie. :) The book is about this girl who is playing this game and all the sudden she is in it. There is a Jareth like character who is in love with her and wants her to stay with him. She also has a certain amount of time to get through the game or she has to stay there forever. At the end she faces the Jareth like character and defeats him. Then she goes home with all her friends and like Labyrinth she has changed alot since she was in the game. The similarities are endless but obviously it's not exact but close. That must be why I like the book so much, but not as much as I do the Labyrinth.

You're right, it IS similiar to Labyrinth in a lot of ways. . . except for the ending of the last book in the series. somehow, I can't quite see Jareth doing what Julian did. . . maybe I'm wrong, maybe I need to go watch Labyrinth again. . .

I Love LJSmith books too. I've also got all of them. You're right about the last book though. Jareth wouldn't do that. He's too selfish, but Julian truely loved her so I guess that's why he did that. Gosh I just love that book. But my favorite ones were the Vampire Diaries, the last one was excellent. That is the best book I have read. Anyways, I still love Labyrinth more, it's just amazing with the similarities the author and Labyrinth have. Bye for now.

The Thirteen Clocks

scarlet owls The 13 Clocks is a children's story written in 1950 by James Thurber, famous author of "The Unicorn in the Garden". Thurber thanks a number of people in the forward to "The 13 Clocks". First among them is four-year-old Sara Linda Williams, who allowed the princess heroine to be named after her. Princess Saralinda is good and sweet and warm and the prisioner of her evil uncle. The Duke is a cold, cruel man, who is so cold, Saralinda is the only thing that keeps him warm and happy. Even his mittens and his gloves, which he wears all the time, do not keep him warm. He has frozen all the clock in the castle, murdering time, so that Then can never become Now. A brave prince, disguised as a simple minstrel, risks his life to court Saralinda. Of course the Prince succeeds, and in the epilogue, the Duke is reminded of his defeat and haunted by his wicked past by a child's black ball that is stamped with scarlet owls. With our heroine Sarah Williams having a mother named Linda, surely Henson was familiar with Thurber's story. I can't believe it's a coincidence! And the gloves and the owls are just the whipped cream on the peach!

WaldenBooks still sells this blank journal. There's Night Dreams, the inside cover to Night Dreams, and the inside cover to Day Dreams. (The Day Dreams cover just a has a cat overlooking a field - nothing Labyrinth-related.) The Night Dreams scanned in very dark, so I scanned a close-up of the important parts, such as the white owl above the hedge maze in the first scan and the obvious "Alice in Wonderland" reference in the little girl. These striking similarities might not be apparent in the scans.
